Dieting trends travel in packs too. For a while, every diet getting any buzz at all was purely about protein. Apparently, eating a bagel or an occasional doughnut was the new cardinal sin, and so many people were on these diets that food manufacturers changed their labeling and Krispy Kreme nearly went out of business because of it.
There were miniscule differences among these diets but the thing they all agreed on was that an all-protein-all-the-time approach was good and any carbs at all were bad. Other diets forbade all fruit intake. In addition to this being counterintuitive, it’s also a pretty good rule of thumb that any diet which forbids entire food groups is automatically suspect.
We apparently don’t see the logical disconnect between switching from a diet that forbids a certain food group to one that promotes the heavy consumption of that very same food group. As a nation we do it all the time. In one fell swoop we moved from the no-carb, heavy protein diet fad to the low protein carb-heavy Mediterranean diet. There’s nothing new about this. We’ve been gullible about diet fads since long before John Harvey Kellogg advocated a diet low in fat and protein in his Battle Creek Sanitarium in the early 1900s.
There have been diets emphasizing the exclusive eating of fat, chewing food and then spitting it out, and diets which advocated the heavy consumption of alcohol. People have fallen for cabbage diets, grapefruit diets and even cigarette diets. Although it’s easy to point to the practitioners of these early 19th century diets as being especially gullible, many of our current diet fads are merely recycled versions of earlier diet trends. Even though we have more access to information than any time in human history, when it comes to fad diets we still seem to leave behind our common sense and think that maybe this one will work.
The best way to avoid the pitfalls of bad diet advice is to use common sense and incorporate all of the food groups in sensible proportions. An easy way to ensure that you’re eating healthy food consistently is to do the bulk of your grocery shopping in the outside perimeter of the grocery store. Typically, this is where you will find fresh vegetables, fruit, dairy, meats and whole grain bread. If you make a dash into the inside aisles of the supermarket for pasta or healthy canned food choices, just make sure you’re not tempted by the pre-packaged processed foods on the way. Remember, if you only keep healthy foods in your house, it’s easy to eat a balanced diet.
